If you’re like us and have a busy life, it can be hard to keep your apartment 24/7.

But, did you know that there are amazing benefits to keeping your home clean and organized? Cleaning doesn’t just maintain the appearance of your apartment, but it can also do wonders for your health and wellness!

Here are some reasons why it’s beneficial to keep your home clean and how to do it!

Benefits of Having a Clean Home

#1 Less Stress

Visual clutter can turn into internal clutter. A messy home will subconsciously remind you that while you have a day’s worth of work, the thought of cleaning your home can make you feel exhausted.

Another reason is if you have a decluttered home, it will make moving around the home much easier and less stressful. You’ll know exactly where to find your things and coming home will be more relaxing in general.

There is no doubt a tidy home can relieve and prevent unnecessary stress.

#2 Increase Productivity

A cluttered desk not only looks daunting but imagine having to sift through the piles of paper and junk to find exactly what you need. Not only is it time-consuming, but it can also be hard to concentrate with a pile of mess in front of you,

Having an organized home will increase productivity and help you feel better about taking on the day’s tasks. It also helps to prevent anything that may be blocking your mind from performing your best.

#3 Better Sleep

The outside world is chaotic enough, why replicate that chaos in your own home?

When your apartment is clean and tidy, step in, close the door, and leave the noise outside. Home should be a place to relax at the end of the day, not a place to do more work.

When it’s time for bed and your home is clean, you can drift peacefully off to sleep without spotting any more to-dos.

#4 Stay Healthy

Keeping a clean home is imperative for your overall health.

Sweeping, dusting and vacuuming dispose of dust, dust mites, pet dander, and a dozen of other allergens that cause cold and flu-like symptoms.

Sanitizing surfaces with disinfectants kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can compromise your health.

How to Keep Your Apartment Clean

Here are some tips you can use to keep your home clean and manageable.

#1 Adopt the 15-minute Rule

While most of us have to schedule an entire day to spend cleaning, you can easily keep your home clean by cleaning a little each day.

Dedicate 15 minutes of each day to cleaning your space. You can dedicate a different space each day. It’s also a great way to start your day. We spend 15 minutes cleaning each morning and it’s very meditative and sets the tone for the day.

#2 Take Care of Your Mail

Don’t let your mail stack up on the coffee table or desk. We take 5-10 minutes of our day reviewing our mail and going through packages. We immediately take our packages to the dumpster to prevent any clutter and trash from sitting around the house too long.

#3 Use the Power of Technology

We rely on technology a lot in the home. Our Robovac is set to run automatically each day so that we don’t have to spend our time sweeping. We also use an air purifier to keep dust at bay and keep the air in our living space fresh and clean.

There are so many gadgets that will keep your home tidy without very much effort.

#4 Get an Extra-Large Hamper

Having an extra large hamper will prevent you from strewing your belongings across the bed or chair. It will keep your laundry in one place stuff off where it doesn’t belong.

#5 Start Your Day Cleaning

In our home, cleaning is a daily meditative activity. When we wake up, we complete a quick 10-15 cleaning session of major areas like the kitchen, dining table, coffee table and restroom. This not only wakes us up, but it helps keep the home clean for the remainder of the day.

#6 Set a Cleaning Schedule

Setting a cleaning schedule is a great way to ensure that you make time to clean. You can easily overlook things when you’re rushing to clean the home. We use Google Docs to create a cleaning schedule and strategy. It lists the cleaning tasks for every room in your apartment so that you don’t miss any key areas.

If you live with roommates, use a digital calendar like Google Calendar to set a cleaning schedule that will always keep your home in tiptop shape.

#7 Clean As You Go

You’ll create more work for yourself if you let things pile up. One of our favorite ways to keep the home tidy is cleaning as we go. Be on the lookout for things that you can easily clean so that it doesn’t build up over time.

For example, when I am showering, I use a brush to clean any dust buildup in the shower and bathroom corners. I may even give the toilet a nice wipe down and clean the bowl once a week after I shower.

#8 Deep Clean Twice a Year

Deep cleaning is an essential part of keeping your apartment fresh and clean. When deep cleaning, make sure you do the following:

  • Dust and wipe down ceilings, walls, and baseboards.
  • Clean the interiors of refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens, microwaves and dishwashers.
  • Remove items from your kitchen cabinets and wash cabinet interiors.
  • Wash and wipe down your windows, curtains, and blinds.
  • Clear out your closet! Donate or give away clothes that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in the past year.
  • Remove dirt and build-up from your oven range hood and the exteriors of kitchen cabinets.

And while you’re rearranging your cabinets and drawers, make sure you throw out things that have gone unused for over a year. We also have a blog post about declutter your small apartment, in case you want to take a look. Declutter your home so that you have more space to breathe and live!
